Moonstone Tower — Feldspar with Blue Adularescence

This tower is composed of moonstone, a variety of feldspar showing a soft blue optical effect known as adularescence.

The piece displays a warm cream to champagne base with flashes of electric blue across the surface. This effect is caused by light scattering between microscopic layers of feldspar minerals (typically orthoclase and albite) within the stone.

The shimmer appears to move as the angle changes, highlighting the internal layered structure and giving the surface that signature glowing effect.

Fine linear textures visible across the tower are natural growth and cleavage features typical of feldspar minerals.

Geological & Scientific Notes

Moonstone forms within the feldspar group, one of the most abundant mineral groups in the Earth’s crust.

The blue flash (adularescence) occurs due to the intergrowth of two feldspar minerals with slightly different compositions. As the crystal cools, these minerals separate into extremely thin alternating layers.

When light enters the stone, it scatters between these layers, producing the floating glow effect seen on the surface.

The strength and colour of the flash depend on the thickness and uniformity of these internal layers, which is why some areas show stronger blue than others.

Condition

• Smooth polished finish

• Strong visible flash on one main face

• Natural internal lines and inclusions present

• Minor surface marks consistent with material

• No major damage observed

Care Instructions

• Mohs hardness: ~6–6.5

• Avoid knocks and drops (cleavage planes present)

• Clean with a soft dry cloth

• Avoid harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaning

• Store separately to prevent scratching
