This brecciated amethyst freeform features large, well-defined fragments of amethyst and quartz set within a re-cemented silica matrix. The piece displays strong structural contrast, with distinct angular sections separated by lighter quartz boundaries, creating a bold, fractured mosaic pattern across the surface.

The polished finish enhances clarity and depth, revealing internal fracture planes, subtle translucency, and variations in colour that shift between soft lavender and deeper purple tones.

Geological & Scientific Notes

Brecciated amethyst forms when quartz and amethyst crystals are broken apart by geological stress and later cemented back together by silica-rich fluids. This process produces a solid structure composed of angular fragments, often separated by lighter quartz or chalcedony-filled boundaries.

In this piece, the larger fragment size and clearly defined boundaries suggest fewer but more pronounced fracturing events, followed by strong silica re-cementation. The lighter lines running between sections are healed fracture zones, where new quartz has crystallised and bonded the structure together.

The purple coloration is caused by trace iron within the quartz lattice, modified by natural irradiation. Variations in tone—from pale lavender to deeper purple—reflect differences in iron concentration and growth conditions during formation.
